Penang Second Bridge

 

 

 

  • New bridge under construction in Penang.
  • It will connect BatuKawan on mainland SeberangPrai and BatuMaung on Penang Island.
  • It will be second bridge to link the island to the mainland after Penang Bridge
  • Total Length of the RM4.5 billion bridge is 24km.
  • It will become the longest bridge in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
  • China Harbour Engineering Co Ltd (CHEC) expected to start work on the second Penang Bridge in November 2008.
  • It was postponed from completion in May 2012 and  later to November 2013
  • The bridge will be built with a large loan from the People’s Republic of China to continue and maintain the economic relationship between China & Malaysia.
  • The Penang Second Bridge is a High Impact Project (HIP) launched under theNinth Malaysia Plan.
  • The project is being delivered by a special purpose Concession Company formed by the government of Malaysia, JambatanKeduaSdnBhd (JKSB). The bridge measuring a total of 24 km in length is being constructed by UEM Builders Sdn Bhd.
  • On 12 November 2006, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Penang Second Bridge was performed by the fifth Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
  • On 3 October 2012, media reports indicated that the bridge was 84% complete, and that the bridge was due to be completed approximately two months ahead of the deadline of Sep.2013
  • Overall length: 24 km (15 mi)
  • Length over water: 16.9 km (10.5 mi)
  • Main span: Length - 250 m
  • Height clearance (above water): 30 m
  • Number of vehicle lanes: 2 + 1 for motorcycles (each direction)
  • Targeted date to be opened to the public: November 2013
  • Overall cost: Around RM3 billion
  • Average time taken to drive from BatuKawan to BatuMaung: 20 mins
  • Proposed speed limit on bridge: 80 km/h (50 mph)
  • Percentage of local contents to be used: 60%
